I’ve never been a huge baseball fan .. I think it stems back to my days in little league when my mother made me play baseball … and football … because my older brother did .. but that is really neither here nor there ..
I never got the chance to meet Harry Kalas. Until today, I could have walked right by him and not even known who he was, but if I were in a crowded room and heard his voice, I would recognize it.
Harry Kalas was THE voice of the Philadelphia Phillies.
At the time of his death, Mr. Kalas was announcing his 39th season with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Mr. Kalas has been the announcer for the Philadelphia Phillies longer than I’ve been alive.
Mr. Kalas died April 13th 2009 at approximately 12:30pm .. Mr. Kalas was 73 years old.
Mr. Kalas was found deceased inside the press box on April 13, 2009, prior to the Washington Nationals’ home opener against the Phillies.
Mr. Kalas was taken to George Washington University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:20 PM EDT.
On April 14th, 2009, it was confirmed that Mr. Kalas suffered a massive heart attack due to heart disease.
Mr. Kalas was quoted as complaining of breathing problems in the weeks before his death, but they did not seem to affect his announcing abilities;Mr. Kalas had called the Phillies/Rockies game the day before.
Lineup in hand, Mr. Kalas rode the elevator to the press level and began preparing for a 3 p.m. game between the Phillies and Washington Nationals.
Philadelphia is a baseball city. I was born and raised in Philadelphia, and even though I’ve never been a huge baseball fan, I shared in the pride of our city last year when we won our first world series since 1980.
Philadelphia has been different since the death of Mr. Kalas. You can see it on peoples faces while they walk down the street. This is the end of an era, and baseball fan or not, the end of an era is a meaningful event.
